Performed reading at the Octagon

Following two and a half days of intensive work with our great actors – Gary, Caroline, Holly and Nadia – and brilliant input from both Elizabeth Newman and Lisa O’Neill, we had a performed reading to an invited audience on Friday 20th January at 2pm. The process had been incredibly useful, finding ways through knotty little problems of storyline or logic, exchanging really interesting creative and issue based ideas and watching the piece come to life, which was so important. After the reading, the audience gave us some really useful feedback – the sort of stuff we need to get this piece exactly right. Because of the subject matter and because of the storyline it would be so easy to get this play disasterously wrong, too funny, too moralistic, too anti porn, too pro porn etc etc, but the feedback assured us that we are heading in the right direction.
Next steps include a reading with Activ8′s Indra group and a scratch performance in June at the Octagon, which will be opened up to a wider audience. By the end of February we also hope to have at least sections of the script posted up here for comment.

Bolton Octagon Workshop days for Pornified Play

Kim and Paul have now written the first full draft of the Project XXX play which is called Pornification. On 18th-20th of January we will be working with Elizabeth at Bolton Octagon to workshop the play, with a read through at 2pm on the Friday. After this we will be posting the script up for comment, so please do contact us if you would like more info.

So, the first draft of the script is nearly complete – only one more scene to go. Then it goes to Paul as co-writer before we will put it up here for comments. Once we’ve got the first draft commented on, we will look at any thoughts people have had and then we will incorporate those thoughts before the dramaturgy sessions at Bolton Octagon in January 2012.

At the Pornified Conference at IOE

I’m at the Pornified Conference at the Institute of Education. I gave my paper on the project as a work in progress – sadly to only 6 people – but there have been some really interesting speakers, especially Martin Barker, and I’ve met some interesting people. I think that some of the debates that have come up here will inform further the creative piece. For example, there definitely seems to be two camps here, one that is anti-porn and one that is pro-porn and interested mostly in documenting porn use rather than porn content. The two sides seem to be at loggerheads and simply appear to believe that the other side is plain old ‘wrong’. This is a shame, as I’ve learned a lot from both sides and think there is much of interest in what they both have to say. This is the danger when academic arguments become so theoretical that they lose all touch with actual people, with any sense of community at all, and so they tend to talk themselves into circles whilst no one else is listening because they long ago lost interest in the petty fighting. That’s a little how I felt by the end of the conference, interesting though it was – and there was some really interesting work happening in Australia, work I hope Project XXX can link to in some way. But the bickering really let me down and it felt as if this was a real shame, as it turned what should have been a lively and interesting debate into a bun fight!

Project XXX is run by writers Kim Wiltshire and Paul Hine. Funded by Arts Council England, Project XXX is a multi-media theatre project exploring the mainstreaming of Internet Pornography, the use of this porn by young people, and how this use may be effecting their relationships, their expectations of sex and their emotional relationships. If you go to the News section you will be kept updated on what is happening month by month. The project began in September 2011.
